Overview

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are infections that are passed from one person to another through sexual contact. They are usually spread during vaginal, oral, or anal sex. But sometimes they can spread through other sexual contact involving the penis, vagina, mouth, or anus. This is because some STDs, like herpes and HPV, are spread by skin-to-skin contact.

Causes

Sexually transmitted infections can be caused by: Bacteria. Gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia are examples of STDs that are caused by bacteria. Parasites. Trichomoniasis is an STD caused by a parasite. Viruses. STDs caused by viruses include human papillomavirus (HPV), the herpes simplex virus, and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS.

Symptoms

If there are symptoms, they could include:

  • Unusual discharge from the penis or vagina
  • Sores or warts on the genital area
  • Painful or frequent urination (peeing)
  • Itching and redness in the genital area
  • Blisters or sores in or around the mouth
  • Abnormal vaginal odor
  • Anal itching, soreness, or bleeding
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever
HIV

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. ‘Immunodeficiency’ refers to the weakening of the immune system by the virus.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms:

  • sore throat
  • fever
  • rash over the body.
Transmission of HIV

If someone with HIV has a detectable viral load, they can pass on HIV through the following body fluids:

  • blood
  • semen
  • vaginal fluid
  • anal mucus
  • breast milk.
People can get HIV through:
  • vaginal/frontal and anal sex without a condom
  • sharing drug injecting equipment
  • sharing sex toys
  • mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy
  • coming into contact with contaminated blood.
HIV cannot be passed on by:
  • kissing
  • hugging
  • shaking hands
  • sharing space with someone
  • sharing a toilet
  • any other general social contact.
  • sharing household items such as cups, plates, cutlery, or bed linen
How is HIV diagnosed
  • HIV elisa method
  • HIV western blot method(confirmatory test)
  • HIV viral load-RNA viral load quantitative PCR
  • Absolute cd4 count
Syphilis

Syphilis is an infection caused by bacteria. Most often, it spreads through sexual contact. The disease starts as a sore that's often painless and typically appears on the genitals, rectum or mouth. Syphilis spreads from person to person through direct contact with these sores. It also can be passed to a baby during pregnancy and childbirth and sometimes through breastfeeding.

Symptoms

Syphilis develops in stages.

    Primary syphilis
  • The first symptom of syphilis is a small sore called a chancre (SHANG-kur). The sore is often painless. It appears at the spot where the bacteria entered your body. Most people with syphilis develop only one chancre. Some people get more than one.

  • Secondary syphilis

    A rash caused by syphilis:

  • Often is not itchy.
  • May look rough, red or reddish-brown.
  • Might be so faint that it's hard to see.
Tertiary syphilis

After the latent stage, up to 30% to 40% of people with syphilis who don't get treatment have complications known as tertiary syphilis.

  • When to see a doctor
    • Have had sexual contact with someone who might have the disease.
    • Have another sexually transmitted disease such as HIV.
    • Are pregnant.
    • Regularly have sex with more than one partner.
    • Have unprotected sex, meaning sex without a condom.
    Screening test
    • Rapid plasma reagin (RPR), which is a blood test.
    • Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test, which can be done on blood or spinalfluid
